Interpretation of Water Quality Data
Fecal Count:
Water is tested twice weekly during the swim season. A 100ml sample of water is delivered to the Wyoming Public Health Laboratory and tested for the level of E. Coli in the water. According to the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality Rules and Regulations, swimming areas shall have 235 organisms or less. Levels above 235 constitute closure of the beach until the level drops to 235 or less.
pH Level:
Water is tested twice weekly during the swim season. A standard
pool test kit is used to determine the pH level. According
to Wyoming Swimming Pool and Similar Installations Regulations,
the pH in regulated swimming pools should be between 7.2 and
7.8, however, there are no standards for swim beaches. (THIS
IS FOR COMPARISON INFORMATION ONLY).
Nitrate Level:
Water is tested once during the swim season. A 100ml sample
of water is collected and delivered to a private Wyoming lab.
There are no standards set to determine what the nitrate level
in beach water should or should not be. Drinking water standards
set 10.0 ppm as the maximum level of nitrates. (THIS IS FOR
COMPARISON INFORMATION ONLY).
Water Temperature:
Water is tested twice weekly during the swim season. The water
temperature is checked at knee level at the same time other
samples are being collected. There are no standards for water
temperature at swim beaches. Pool water has to be 70 degrees
for the pool to be opened. (THIS IS FOR COMPARISON INFORMATION
ONLY)
